FKM Viton SD Gummi Hintergrund

FKM

High temperature material with resistance to many chemicals, oils

Fluorerubber

Fluororubber, also known as FKM or under the trade name Viton, represents a family of elastomers

with exceptional material properties and durability.

The chemical structure and the impressive temperature resistance, as well as resistance to

different environmental influences make FKM a key material in various industries.

Chemical structure

FKM consists mainly of tetrafluoroethylene, hexafluoropropylene, vinylidene fluoride and optionally

other fluorinated monomers. The molecular structure is saturated and contains fluorine atoms.

The introduction of fluorine atoms into the polymer chain leads to a significant improvement in the

chemical resistance, temperature resistance and ozone resistance in comparison

to almost any other elastomer.

Material properties and resistance

  • Characterized by its excellent chemical media resistance and compression set properties

  • has good ozone, UV and weather resistance

  • high gas density and oxygen impermeability

  • Recommended for contact with fuels, mineral oils, organic fats and aggressive acids and alkalis

  • Use in the aerospace, automotive, chemical, food and oil industries

  • Temperature resistance: -40°C to 250°C

flexibility Fluororubber is characterized by high flexibility at both high and low temperatures, which makes it ideal for applications with dynamic movements and deformations over a wide temperature range. Tear resistance FKM shows high tear strength, making it very resistant to mechanical stress and crack propagation. Wear resistance The material has good wear resistance, making it suitable for abrasive wear applications. density The density of fluororubber is excellent, resulting in a balanced combination of strength and lightness. Insulation properties FKM shows good insulating properties, especially electrical and thermal insulation Weather resistance FKM is resistant to weathering, UV radiation and ozone, ensuring long-term stability under various weather conditions Chemical resistance Fluororubber is resistant to many chemicals, including acids, bases, solvents and various industrial chemicals. Temperature resistance FKM retains its material properties at a wide range of temperatures, from low temperatures up to temperatures of 250°C Water vapor resistance The material is resistant to water vapor and retains its material properties even after prolonged exposure to moisture. FKM may not be resistant to lithium compounds, which is relevant in some lubricant applications. At high temperatures and in the presence of concentrated hydrogen fluoride or metal halides, the durability of FKM can also be affected.

Material hardness and coloring

FKM is available in different hardness levels, with the Shore A hardness varying depending on the application.

Typical hardness levels range from 40 Shore A to 90 Shore A. In terms of colors, FKM is often available in black or

also widely available in brown or green.

Industries and applications

Fluororubber (FKM) is widely used in industries that are exposed to extreme conditions where conventional elastomers would fail. FKM has established itself as an indispensable material, particularly in areas where high thermal and chemical resistance as well as excellent flexibility are required.

Automotive industry Due to its resistance to fuels, oils and high temperatures, FKM is ideal for sealing applications in engine compartments and fuel systems. Aerospace The unique combination of temperature resistance and chemical resistance makes FKM a key component in aerospace, especially for seals, O-rings or hoses in engines and fuel systems. chemical industry The exceptional resistance to aggressive chemicals makes FKM in the form of seals, sleeves and pipes ideal for use in chemical processing, where high reliability and longevity are required. Oil and gas industry The drilling equipment and pumps in the oil industry are exposed to extreme conditions, including high temperatures, pressures and various chemicals. FKM seals offer excellent resistance to oils, fuels and drilling fluids. They ensure a reliable seal and prevent the penetration of aggressive substances. Energy production The resistance to high temperatures and various chemicals makes FKM seals and membranes a preferred material in power plants and other energy production facilities.

Fluororubber differs from other rubber materials due to its outstanding properties. The combination of high flexibility, excellent thermal and chemical resistance as well as a wide range of applications in critical industrial areas makes FKM an irreplaceable material. Its ability to provide consistent performance even under extreme conditions makes fluororubber a preferred choice for demanding applications in various industries. FKM therefore remains a key material in industries where resistance to extreme environmental conditions and chemicals is required.

Perfluoroelastomer FFKM

FKM and FFKM (perfluoroelastomers) are closely related materials, but FFKM has an even higher fluorine concentration and offers improved resistance to aggressive chemicals and extreme temperatures. FFKM is used in applications with the highest resistance requirements, while FKM has excellent performance

in a wide range of conditions and with a clearly is more cost-effective.
